I never have a holiday from thinking about food and drink!

By Gavin Castle on Jun 16, 09 02:35 PM

If you're like me, when the thoughts of holidays start to wander into your mind, it's the thought of the food you'll be dining on is as important as the weather forecast.
The different dishes cooked using different ingredients, whether it be Spain, Thailand, France or even Cornwall or Ireland all makes up a huge amount of that holiday vibe... or is it me that's just obsessed?

Ive just come back from 10 days in Spain at the brother-in-laws place and the nicest two meals despatched, and the most fun having them, were the ones created on the big brick BBQ oven on the roof of the apartment.
A steady day of grazing on salads, bread, prawns, chicken, ribs and paella (everything bought locally) washed down with a few cold beers, some Sangria then a glass of red or two was followed by staying in at night watching a couple of dvds... now thats relaxing. Sometimes I think we put too much pressure on ourselves to go out every night to the bars and resaurants.
I even take books about food to read while I'm away! I read A Late Dinner by Paul Richardson, which is a journey around the different regions of Spain, with a dash of history and cultural references thrown in. It's a very enjoyable book that has your mouth watering every other page.
I also read Tough Cookies by Simon Wright, it's an easy read and tells the stories of 4 top Britsh chefs and how they've ended up at the top of their game.
Another one (more for the food historian though) is Fish, Flesh and Good Red Herring by Alice Thomas Ellis and Tom Parker Bowles's The Year Of Eating Dangerously is a bit more fun, but still informative.

If your not going off this year though, (I reckon it's going to be a great summer here) there's the Huddersfield Food Festival on again this year from Aug 16-19th and also this event in Leeds my nephew pointed out to me that looks well worth a visit www.leedslovesfood.com.

Whatever the summer holds for you, enjoy your food and drink!!

Hi Gav, you're dead right. We are off to Spain on Friday for a few days and Turkey in August. The food is what I am thinking about already. Tough cookies sounds like a good read. I might just take it with me. The food festival is great and I am looking forward to the goat curry which is tremendous.
