At last a reason (quite a few actually) to like Leeds

By Gavin Castle on Apr 21, 09 02:05 PM

Leeds is definitely the place to be! As much as the football team is hated with a passion round here (and most other places) there's no doubting it is the Champions League as far as food and drink is concerned. Treat yourself to a family day rover, whether your a genuine family or just the two of you and for eight quid and a twenty minute train journey you will find yourself surrounded by smart bars and restaurants where you can have a different type of day everytime you visit.

I had seen in The Observer food magazine awards that a small noodle bar called Fuji Hiro, on the outskirts of the Merrion Centre, had been highly recommended. It's very much a cafe environment but it was very clean and very, very busy when we arrived at about 1.30pm. A mix of students, families and solitary diners, and all seemed to regulars and good friends with the staff.
Theres a great deal of choice on the menu, and all cooked using very fresh ingredients judging by the taste. I had chilli beef Ramen, which is a broth laced with coriander, fresh red chilli, chargrilled beef and chinese vegetables while my wife had a plate of chicken hot and sour noodles. Both were huge and both fantastic.
They sell Asahi lager and wine by the glass. The food is very good value and I would highly recommend it.

FUJI HIRO, Merrion Centre, 45 Wade Lane, Leeds.

From there we moved to Brown's in The Light complex for a quick drink in fantastic surroundings before going to see Let The Right One In at the cinemas there. After that
it was a potter round the shops and then onto my favourite bar in Leeds, it's called North Bar and it's a proper drinking place. They're having a bit of a Belgian beer festival at the moment, but it always has a great choice of beers, I had a couple of Dortmunder Union (one of those they only serve in halves) and my wife had a Belgian raspberry beer, her first ever proper full half of real ale (she was very proud).
I couldn't help but order some bread, cheese and pickles to graize on as well. A huge chunk of crusty bread with a big slab of Yorkshire smoked goats cheese with some gherkins and silverskin pickled onions...FANTASTIC!

After visiting a few more shops we headed down to the Corn Exchange area and a couple of the smarter bars as the "Saturday night shift" started to appear, all dolled up and ready for a big night out.
The mood in the bars was never threatening and full of very different people indeed.
One last call for some more snap on the way back to the train station took us to GeorgeTown restaurant for some Malysian food. It's located in the historic Dyson's clock building and the surroundings are very colonial and grand. There are plenty of small dishes to order including chicken satay, skewered prawns and curry puff pastries filled with chicken and potato to make up a very smart supper for two.

That might sound alot of food in a day but it wasn't, although it was very tempting to fall asleep on the train on the way home (don't its fatal!)

All in all a great day out, just try it.
