Bradford Film Festival: Day 9 (Friday 26th)
Another day, another mooted classic I'd never seen before. Yesterday, it was Rebel Without A Cause; today, it was Woody Allen's romantic comedy Manhattan.
I like Woody Allen films - Sweet and Lowdown and Match Point, for instance - but generally not when they have Woody Allen in them. A lot of people like Woody Allen as an actor, I've just always found him a bit of a wet lettuce, a bit of a drip, somewhat nasal, slightly weaselly, shoe-hurlingly infuriating.
Manhattan, then, could have been a problem for me. It is directed by Woody Allen. It is written by Woody Allen. It stars Woody Allen. So imbued is the film with Allen's DNA it could probably be classed as a relative. However, I'm happy to say the film surprised me - I started off initially irritated by Allen and his screenplay's highbrow-or-die philosophy. But, eventually, the bespectacled joker wore me down - in the end, I had endeared to both.
Which I suppose is one of the man's, and the film's, charms: the ability to be flawed yet oddly loveable. I still can't really get on board with Allen's 42 year-old character's affair with a girl of 17, but the black and white cinematography - backed by George Gershwin's fairytale-esque musical score - is astounding. This film is a rarity in that it's a comedy that looks good as well as being funny.
And it is funny. Allen's screenplay is full of charmingly neurotic humour and even some obviously silent screen-inspired vignettes, but the lovingly composed framing, especially those long shots of New York in all its epic majesty, are what will stay with me. Has any other comedian ever made a film this beautiful?
Of the six individual short films, all by different directors, on display in International Shorts: Programme 2, two stood out the most for me. The first was Siegfried Fruhauf's Palmes D'Or, a 6-minute attack on the senses in the form of low frequency sound (reminiscent of Irreversible's opening scenes) and a flickering block of black and white static. Some might consider taking Fruhauf to court for ocular abuse - I witnessed a walk out after just one minute - but it is an interesting experience to endure nonetheless.
The second was 18 year-old Eilif Bremer Landsend's Last Stop, the depiction of a dying woman's last hours. The film isn't particularly original and it may be less remarkable without the knowledge that a teenager has made such an assured film, but Last Stop was still the most affecting short film out of today's selection. If Landsend can create such mature material and coax such a natural performance out of his amateur lead at just 18, I can only imagine what he might be capable of with a bit more experience behind him.

There will probably consistently be a person doing things completely for the shock value of it. Gal Gaga claimed she i didn't desire to affront vegans and also she wasn't a joint of meat.....in fact what was the lady's personal message?....what will we now have worked out with the declaration the lady was attempting to make?
