'New Moon' Soundtrack Turns Out To Be Surprisingly Brilliant - But What Is The Best Movie Soundtrack Ever?
Teen favourite 'New Moon' has been on general release for a couple of weeks now. I'm not one to judge it - I haven't seen the film and I did enjoy 'Twilight' - but I'll admit that reviews like this one have put me off slightly.
But maybe it's not so bad? "It's intellectually and socially detrimental to both literature and cinema, simultaneously." Give it a chance though? "It's a cheap, shoddy piece of work, one that banks on moviegoers' anticipation without even bothering to craft a satisfying experience for them. Its pandering is an insult." But surely there are some positive elements to it? "New Moon takes the tepid achievement of 'Twilight', guts it, and leaves it for undead."
I hope the makers of the film didn't read any of those reviews. Comments like that must cut deep.
But hey, at least the soundtrack turned out well guys! Yes, the number of great contemporary artists that feature in 'New Moon' is truly remarkable: The Killers, Muse, Editors, Radiohead's Thom Yorke, Grizzly Bear and Bon Iver (don't worry if you haven't heard of the last two; not many people have, but it's probably for the best if you go out and buy their albums right now). Not only that, but they've contributed some excellent work to an overall fine album. In fact, the 'New Moon' Original Soundtrack has been welcomed with significantly more praise than the film.
Which brings us nicely on to this question: what are the best ever movie soundtracks?
Immediately, the works of two directors spring to mind.
The first would be Tarantino - from the 'super sounds of the '70s' in 'Reservoir Dogs' to the R&B and soul of 'Jackie Brown', Tarantino always injects some retro pleasure into his soundtracks.
The second is Scorsese. He may well be The Master Of The Soundtrack - films like 'Mean Streets' and 'Casino', with their Rolling Stones-dominated selection of rock and pop, made fashionable the idea to have popular songs provide the backing music for films.
The small bearded one's greatest aural achievement, though, is 'Goodfellas.' Wall-to-wall songs charting the passage of time from the '50s through to the early '80s take us on a musical journey from sweet crooned numbers by the likes of Dean Martin, via soul courtesy of Aretha Franklin and rock and blues from artists such as Cream and George Harrison, climaxing with a cosy little tune by punk's angry man, Sid Vicious. It's definitely one of the best movie soundtracks out there.
I can't ignore 'American Graffiti' either, with its '50s and '60s tunes perfectly evoking a more innocent time in suburban America. The same applies for 'O Brother, Where Art Thou's toe-tappin' bluegrass ditties, transporting you to a bygone era.
Also, being partial to The Beatles, it'd be hard not to recognise one of their films, such as 'A Hard Day's Night' or 'Help'. Not 'Let It Be', though - the vibes on that are just bad, man.
My personal favourite, though, would have to be the soundtrack to Sofia Coppola's 'Marie Antoinette.'
Not a popular choice, you might say - if you were to believe the numerous 'Top 100' lists out there, you would think that great soundtracks are only present in great films (in my opinion, the film was one of the most underrated of the last decade, but I realise that I am in the minority so I'll just let that argument go). 'Marie Antoinette' proves that that is not always the case - I'm talking new wave and post-punk at its very finest here. We've got The Cure, Siouxsie And The Banshees and The Strokes backing a period drama, for crying out loud. It shouldn't work, but it does. Never has a soundtrack been so part of a film's identity and elevated it to such a higher quality. Plus, any film tracklist that's wise enough to include New Order's 'Ceremony', as we all know, immediately stands out as being one of the coolest soundtracks out there.
