Carriers: Review

By Karl Benecke on Dec 12, 09 11:36 AM

This film was completed two years ago, but only gets its release this week. Not because of audiences craving for a new viral pandemic film, but more I think to do with the films protagonist Chris Pine. His recent fame in the recently revamped Star Trek franchise can only help 'carry' this film and its prospects.

Survivors making a stand

With much of the world ravaged by a plague, Pine who plays Brian is one of four survivors travelling across North Americas wilderness in search of safety.

The tone of the film is bleak and dreary as you would expect after a virus strikes, but there is a distinct lack of horror, blood, guts and gore. This is something that often limit's the appeal of viral pandemic films alongside the more gory virus/zombie inspired films such as Danny Boyles fantastic 28 Days Later.

This film is competent visually without ever impressing as much as similar predecessors Outbreak and Cabin Fever. The cast of surviving characters are not the most compelling bunch to watch, including Pine himself, who's performance becomes less enterprising as the film progresses.

Not one to totally avoid Carriers has its suspense fuelled moments, but this is a genre that has seen many similar films recently and a few of them have been better than this offering. My advice would be to stay tuned for future releases of a similar nature to Carriers.

Cormac McCarthy's The Road is scheduled for its release next month and further down the line there is a fourth instalment of the Resident Evil Franchise titled Resident Evil: Afterlife, which boasts a bigger budget than Carriers and of course the thrilling sight of Milla Jovovich.
