Angel's Egg: Leeds International Film Festival
One of my personal highlights of Leeds International Film Festival was the screening of forgotten 1985 animated film Angel's Egg.
It had previously been unseen in European cinemas for 20 years, but this film has lost none of its truly haunting appeal, and seeing it on the big screen at Hyde Park Picture House was truly a treat.
Directed by Mamoru Oshii, the film is set in a barren world and centres around a young girl who spends her days collecting water in jars and protecting a mysterious egg. A passing man carrying a strange cross becomes interested in the young girls egg and they begin travelling the vast and barren landscape together, both with strangely quiet dispositions.
The fantastic thing about this animation is the fact that it has not aged one little bit, each scene is drawn with painstaking brilliance, each facial expression and body movement by the two un-named central characters is so real and encapsulating. The soundtrack is very chilling, and has an apocalyptic end of the world type feel.
The plot and central theme of the animation is something of a mystery, both characters communicate to each other using metaphors in very slight tones. The man tells a story from the Old Testament in one scene that focuses upon the story of Noah's Arc, and the religious symbolism in the film only serves to drag the mystery of the plot further in to darkness.
I believe Angels Egg to be a rather existential film, and something that questions the key ideals of mankind's existence. It has a slow burning trance type quality to it, something that sets it aside from modern fast-paced anime films.
From a visual perspective the film is rich in detail and truly is a artistic sight to behold. However if you are the type of viewer that likes a clearly defined plot to go with your animation then you will be more than likely disappointed by a film that poses lots of questions and gives little in the way of answers.

We all love anime, simply not in the identical manner. I retain a listing of anime minutes that for me are realized joy. They donât occur very often, but in the space of a calendar week, I had three. Truly relished them wholly. Itâs moments like these that make me carry on up with so many hours of anime. Then I realized that there are 5 presently running shows that I would order as favourites. Thatâs nearly never happened before. Hence my statement about the quality of this season.
