3rd Chronicles of Riddick Rumoured to be in Early Production Stages.

By Karl Benecke on Dec 15, 09 11:42 AM

Earlier in the year David Twohy, who directed Pitch Black and The Chronicles of Riddick said that there were some ideas floating around for a third instalment of the Riddick series.

Recently the Riddick camp seem to be going through the motions of pre-production , with the official Facebook page saying: "The Riddick team is in New Zealand location scouting already... that's exciting".

The series began with Pitch Black and it featured Riddick played by Vin Diesel, who is a wanted man with a price on his head. As he is being transported by a band of mercenaries between prisons, the crew are forced to make an emergency landing on a planet with three suns. The planet seems to be abandoned on the surface but lurking below the surface in darkened caverns are cannibalistic aliens. The aliens proceed to devour members of the crew in the darkness, their only defence coming in the form of the dangerous Riddick, who has the ability to see in the dark.

Pitch Black is a fantastic example of a science fiction film cleverly incorporating moments of sheer horror. This film is not as heart stopping as earlier sci-fi horrors such as Alien or even the fantastic Event Horizon. However, Pitch Black does have is an inventive storyline, an interesting lead character in Riddick and some truly terrifying creature confrontations.

The second instalment 'The Chronicles of Riddick' explores Riddick's origins within the film. The universe is in danger of being taken over by a brutal race called Necromongers. Their aim is to assimilate people in to their collective race and drain the resources of planets.

The Official Trailer for Chronicles of Riddick

After confronting a mob of mercenaries and stealing their ship Riddick sets course to Helion Prime, a heavily populated planet. Shortly after Riddick's arrival the planet is attacked by the Necromongers in a brutal show of power by their leader the Lord Marshall (Colm Feore). The Necromongers capture Riddick who find out he is a Furion, one of the last survivors of his race. The Lord Marshall orders Riddick to be killed but he escapes, emerging to take part in a fantastic one on one showdown with the Lord Marshall at the end of the film.

The Chronicles of Riddick is a magnificent spectacle to watch. The special effects are amazing and some of the Riddick battle sequences are choreographed brilliantly. The set designs are bold, and costume choices are also fitting, especially in the case of the intimidating armoured Necromongers.

An interesting look behind the scenes of Pitch Black and Chronicles of Riddick

The third instalment is rumoured to be called Riddick 3: Return to Furia and could hopefully make a return in around a years time, provided pre-production continues to progress well. Director David Twohy has suggested that the large studio budget of Chronicles of Riddick was a mistake and a fitting third film could be created on a smaller production budget.

Hopefully in 2010 we will have concrete release dates for a third instalment of the Riddick series.
